Valve has released a huge Steam Deck update. This new SteamOS version brings many features. It also supports rival AMD handhelds. This includes Lenovo’s Legion Go. It also includes Asus’ ROG Ally series. The update has been in development for months. It started in preview. Then it moved to beta. Now, it is a full, stable release.
Official Support for Third-Party Handhelds
SteamOS 3.7.8 is a significant release. It is the first stable version. It adds official support for the Lenovo Legion Go S. It also offers an official “recovery” image. This lets users install SteamOS. It works on other AMD handhelds. Examples include the ROG Ally. The original Legion Go is also supported. Valve promised this in January 2025.
Previous Installation Methods
Until now, options were limited. Users could try to force the original Steam Deck image. Or they could use alternatives like Bazzite. Now, Valve provides explicit instructions. These guide users on installing the image. It works on Legion Go or ROG Ally devices. Valve warns that support for non-“Powered by SteamOS” devices is not final.
New Features for Steam Deck Owners
Even without rival handhelds, SteamOS 3.7.8 offers much. It brings many improvements to the Steam Deck.
Audio and Connectivity Enhancements
Users can now use Bluetooth earbuds’ microphones. This is a long-requested feature. It works in desktop mode. Unfortunately, it is not yet in gaming mode. This uses HFP/HSP profiles. The Steam Deck LCD can now be turned on remotely. A Bluetooth controller can activate it. This feature was exclusive to the OLED model. It is useful when the Steam Deck is docked to a TV.
Power and Performance Controls
Users can now set a Battery Charge Limit. This can be set to 80 percent. This improves battery longevity. It helps if the handheld is always plugged in. Users can also frame-limit variable refresh rate displays. Control over the P-state frequency of certain AMD CPUs is also added.
Under the Hood Improvements
This update includes new software versions. It uses new versions of Arch Linux. New Mesa graphics drivers are included. A much newer Plasma desktop mode is present. A full changelog for SteamOS 3.7.8 is available.
Future of SteamOS Expansion
An updated SteamOS FAQ hints at future plans. Valve seems ready to expand SteamOS. It may go beyond Lenovo and the Steam Deck. The FAQ states: “We’re currently working with select partners on officially licensed Powered by SteamOS devices. Please reach out to us at poweredbysteamos@valvesoftware.com for more information about licensing SteamOS for your device.”
The industry anticipates further announcements. Rumors suggest a wireless VR headset. This device is codenamed “Deckard.” It might point to a SteamOS-powered living room console. Valve is moving steadily. A master plan for Steam Machines might be emerging.
