A rear-mounted eight-speed automatic transaxle is the sole gearbox option. Aston discontinued the dog-leg manual for the 2022 model year. Power balance at the rear axle comes via an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The Roadster’s weight distribution is 49:51 front-to-rear. The coupe has a 50:50 distribution. With reduced traction settings, the Vantage slides predictably. It is easily manageable. The brakes offer consistent stopping power. Steering is firm and precise. There is no perceptible body flex, even with the top down. Simon Newton, Aston’s director of vehicle performance and attributes, explains the Roadster’s taut reactions. This is due to its adaptive dampers and updated undercarriage. Engineering for the roadster began at the chassis stage. The droptop received a stiffer subframe than the coupe.
Instead of adding material everywhere, Aston reinforced specific mounting points. These were areas where the topless car experiences additional load. This strategy resulted in better lateral and torsional stiffness. It avoided adding a significant amount of extra weight. Newton emphasizes focusing material where it’s most needed. Ultimately, Aston claims the roadster weighs only 132 pounds more than the hardtop.
