Jane Birkin’s Original Hermès Bag Heads to Auction

Jane Birkin's Original Hermès Bag Heads to Auction

The very first Hermès Birkin bag, famously owned and carried by the late actor and singer Jane Birkin, is poised to make history at Sotheby’s this summer. This highly anticipated auction marks a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of fashion legend.

The leather handbag’s creation sparked a phenomenon, inspiring what would become one of the world’s most desired, elusive, and priciest fashion accessories. While Sotheby’s regularly resells various pre-owned Birkin bags, ranging from $5,000 to $220,000, there is only one true original.

The Birkin’s Cultural Significance and Unique Details

Sotheby’s emphasizes the profound cultural impact of this particular handbag.

Born Out of Necessity

“No handbag in the world carries as much cultural significance as the Hermès Birkin,” Sotheby’s declared in a statement announcing the auction. The auction house highlighted that before it became the ultimate symbol of luxury, “the Birkin was born out of necessity — crafted specifically for Jane Birkin herself.” This origin story adds a layer of practical charm to its luxurious status.

Display and Auction Details

The original Hermès Birkin bag, which features subtle differences from the models sold today, is a centerpiece of Sotheby’s Fashion Icons auction. This prestigious event will take place in Paris from June 26 to July 10. Prior to the auction, the original bag, which is currently owned by a private collector, will be on public display.

It can be viewed at Sotheby’s New York headquarters from June 6 to June 12, offering a rare glimpse of fashion history.

The Serendipitous Origin: A Chance Encounter

The creation of the iconic Birkin bag was sparked by a casual conversation between a celebrated artist and a visionary luxury brand executive.

Birkin’s Influence and Activism

Jane Birkin, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 76, was celebrated not only for her artistry but also for her distinctive style. Beyond her musical collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg and roles in classic films like Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 “Blow-Up,” Birkin was also deeply admired for her unwavering political activism.

She campaigned for various causes, including Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement and the global fight against AIDS. French President Emmanuel Macron honored her upon her passing, writing on social media, “Jane Birkin was a French icon because she was the incarnation of freedom, sang the most beautiful words of our language.”

The 1984 Air France Flight

The Birkin bag’s creation story famously began with an errant remark made by Jane Birkin to Jean-Louis Dumas, who was then the head of Hermès. This fateful encounter occurred on an Air France flight in 1984. During their conversation, Birkin complained that she struggled to find a handbag large enough to accommodate her belongings for daily use.

Seizing the opportunity, Dumas quickly sketched a design for a practical yet elegant bag. He then went on to create this bag, later naming it in her honor. This chance meeting birthed a fashion legend.

A Singular Piece of Fashion History

The original Birkin bag stands apart from its later iterations, embodying a unique moment in design.

Prototype to Pop Culture Phenomenon

Today, the Birkin bag is produced in a vast array of colorways, leather types, and sizes. All these variations are based on the original prototype Dumas designed for the singer. However, as Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, noted, “the Original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind — a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible.”

Pricing and Hermès’ Philosophy on “Cost”

The auction house has not yet publicly disclosed an estimated price for this historically significant bag.

Exceptional Provenance, Unrevealed Estimate

A Sotheby’s spokesperson informed CBS MoneyWatch that an estimate will be provided to genuinely interested parties upon request. This reflects the bag’s “exceptional provenance,” which significantly enhances its value. For context, Sotheby’s previously sold Princess Diana’s historic black sheep sweater in 2023 for $1.1 million, an astonishing 14 times its original estimate of $80,000. This suggests the Birkin bag could fetch an impressive sum.

Quality Over Expense: Dumas’s View

In a December interview with “60 Minutes,” Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas addressed the high price of the fashion house’s leather goods, including the Birkin bag. He asserted that their products are “costly” due to the company’s unwavering refusal to compromise on quality or craftsmanship.

Dumas notably disputed the notion that Hermès goods are “expensive,” while conceding they are indeed “costly” to produce. He explained, “The cost is the actual price of making an object properly with the required level of attention, so that you have an object of quality.” In contrast, he defined “expensive” as a product that “is not delivering what it’s supposed to deliver, but you’ve paid quite a large amount of money for it, then it betrays you.”

Dumas also dismissed accusations that Hermès deliberately limits Birkin bag production as a “diabolical marketing idea.” He insisted that the company simply cannot keep up with the enduring global demand for the Birkin bag. This is largely due to the fact that only a select few highly skilled craftspeople are trained to create each individual item. “Whatever we have, we put on the shelf and it goes,” he stated, reinforcing the consistent demand for these iconic bags.
