In a December interview with “60 Minutes,” Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas addressed the high price of the fashion house’s leather goods, including the Birkin bag. Dumas notably disputed the notion that Hermès goods are “expensive,” while conceding they are indeed “costly” to produce. He explained, “The cost is the actual price of making an object properly with the required level of attention, so that you have an object of quality.” In contrast, he defined “expensive” as a product that “is not delivering what it’s supposed to deliver, but you’ve paid quite a large amount of money for it, then it betrays you.”
Dumas also dismissed accusations that Hermès deliberately limits Birkin bag production as a “diabolical marketing idea.” He insisted that the company simply cannot keep up with the enduring global demand for the Birkin bag.
