Google Meet Sunsets Legacy Duo Features This September

Google Meet Sunsets Legacy Duo Features This September

Google is streamlining its communication platforms. The company has announced that it will finally retire several legacy features from the former Google Duo application in September 2025.

This move marks a significant step in Google’s ongoing effort to unify its video calling services under the single Google Meet brand. Users who previously installed Duo and later saw it rebranded to Meet on their Android phones are now encountering alerts signaling this upcoming transition.

The End of Legacy Duo Calling Features

A new alert is prominently displayed within the Google Meet app for many users, stating: “Meet calling will replace Legacy (Duo) calling in September 2025.” This notification, initially spotted by 9to5Google, confirms the impending removal of specific features that originated from the standalone Duo app.

Features Being Removed

The legacy features slated for removal in September primarily consist of in-call functionalities that were popular in the original Duo application. These include:

  • Family mode: Designed for interactive calls with younger users.
  • Moments: Allowing users to capture short video snippets during calls.
  • Mirror mode: Reversing the video feed, often used for demonstrating activities.
  • Low light mode: Enhancing video quality in dimly lit environments.
  • Knock Knock: A unique feature that allowed callers to see a live preview of the person calling before answering.

These unique features, while once differentiating Duo, are now being phased out as Google pushes for a more consistent and integrated Meet experience.

Preparing for the Transition: What Users Need to Do

Google is actively guiding users through this transition process to ensure a smooth shift to the new Meet calling experience.

Exporting Call History and Messages

To prevent data loss, Google strongly advises users to save their current call history and messages. The company has provided a clear, step-by-step process on its official support page, detailing how to export this data to the updated Google Meet platform. This ensures that valuable conversation logs and video messages are preserved.

Updating to the Latest App Version

A crucial step for a seamless transition is to update the Google Meet app to its latest version. Google emphasizes that for the new calling experience to activate, all participants in a call must be using the most current version of Meet. If any party is still on an older version, the call will automatically default to the legacy calling experience.

Once all users have updated their app, the legacy calling functionalities will no longer be accessible. This phased approach ensures backward compatibility during the transition period.

Enhanced Features in the New Google Meet

While some legacy features are being retired, Google Meet is simultaneously being enhanced with new and upgraded functionalities, aiming to provide a more robust and versatile video communication platform.

Expanded Capabilities

The updated Google Meet offers a suite of advanced features designed to improve the user experience for various communication needs. These expanded capabilities include:

  • Live captions: Providing real-time transcriptions of conversations, enhancing accessibility.
  • In-call chat: Allowing text-based communication during video calls.
  • Stackable effects: Enabling users to combine multiple visual effects.
  • Cloud encryption: Ensuring enhanced security and privacy for communications.
  • Screen sharing: Facilitating collaboration by allowing users to share their device screens.

This continuous evolution of Google Meet signifies Google’s strategy to consolidate its communication efforts, moving away from a fragmented ecosystem of multiple apps performing similar functions. This approach aligns with broader industry trends towards unified communication platforms.

The integration of video calls into a single app, much like the focus on Google Messages with RCS for text communication, represents a more cohesive and user-friendly strategy from the search giant.
