Apple’s Smart Glass Gamble: Must Not Fail

Apples Smart Glass Gamble Must Not Fail

Apple faces a tough situation. The company is notably behind in AI development. Rivals seem far ahead. Yet, Apple appears to be rushing its first AI smart glasses. This is a significant gamble.

A History of Hits and Misses

You might know Apple’s recent story. The Apple Watch was a success after some changes. But then, Apple made some big bets. These bets did not succeed.

The first Apple Vision Pro did not meet high hopes. Project Titan, its car project, also failed. Apple realized the AI race was vital very late. It started many laps behind others.

Are the teams for each project different? Yes, certainly. However, a company’s focus is limited. Attention is a shared resource. This is true even for giant companies like Apple.

Meta Seizes an Opportunity

Meanwhile, Meta found a golden chance. Meta missed the mobile wave. It then invested heavily in immersive tech. One venture was its smart glasses with Ray-Ban. These were initially like Snap’s Spectacles.

Then, the generative AI boom happened. Meta was ready. Thanks to Yann LeCun, its chief AI scientist, Meta had key tech. This allowed Meta to connect AI with its glasses vision.

To be fair, ChatGPT surprised Meta too. Everyone was caught off guard. But LeCun quickly adapted. Meta launched its Llama AI models effectively.

Apple’s Slow AI Reaction

Apple, however, acted differently. It watched the AI boom from afar. Its response was painfully slow. Yet, this long delay on AI might be an advantage. Its new focus on smart glasses could place Apple in a familiar spot. A longtime Apple executive recently spoke to Bloomberg.

He said AI product clarity comes after investment. This is not Apple’s usual method. Apple prefers a clear product goal from the start.

Now, Apple might have a perfect chance. It could have a clear product idea. It may have a defined tech path. It also has an ambitious deadline.

No Room for Another Error

What is uncertain is Apple’s understanding. Does Apple truly get it? It cannot afford another major miss. The stakes are incredibly high this time.
