New Ford Mustang FX Package: A Retro 80s Throwback

New Ford Mustang FX Package: A Retro 80s Throwback

The Ford Mustang is embracing its rich heritage with the introduction of a new FX appearance package. This latest offering for the current S650 generation is a direct homage to the beloved 1980s and 1990s Fox Body Mustangs.

Ford is pulling out all the stops, integrating vibrant retro design details, distinctive paint options, and unique interior touches. The FX package aims to infuse the modern Mustang with a powerful sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of a time when cassette tapes ruled.

Exterior Design: A Whiteout of 80s Attitude

The visual transformation of the Mustang with the FX package leans heavily into bold, contrasting accents.

Oxford White Details

The FX package prominently features Oxford White accents. These include the 19-inch wheels, available in either a standard five-spoke design or a more intricate setup for Performance Package cars, as showcased in Ford’s press images. The white theme extends to the car’s badging. The package revives white emblems and badges, along with distinctive white taillight surrounds. Performance Package models receive white grille nostrils, while standard cars come with Dark Carbonized Gray inserts.

Even the rear window features a gloss-white “MUSTANG” wordmark, presented in a font directly inspired by the 1987–1993 era. The overall effect is a striking visual nod to the past.

Iconic Paint Colors

To fully encapsulate the retro vibe, the FX package offers specific paint choices. The featured car sports Adriatic Blue Metallic, a brand-new color for the 2026 model year. This shade is designed to directly channel the famously vibrant teal associated with the Fox Body era. Ford is also reintroducing Orange Fury Metallic Tricoat, though the Adriatic Blue is clearly the more direct tribute to the Fox Body’s iconic look.

Interior: Plaid Seats and Retro Gauges

The journey back in time continues seamlessly inside the cabin, complementing the Mustang’s inherent legacy.

Nostalgic Seating and Stitching

The nostalgia continues inside, where the FX Package introduces plaid seat inserts. These are paired with premium leather-trimmed bolsters, available for both the standard seats and the optional Recaro sport buckets. Further throwback touches include City Silver and Adriatic Blue contrast stitching. This detailing is meticulously applied across the seats, dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, and center console, creating a cohesive retro ambiance.

Custom Branding and Digital Display

The cabin also features white interior accents and badges, all finished in a custom typeface designed to mirror the original Fox Body’s distinctive branding. Even the seatbelts receive a touch of personalized flair, with available color options including International Orange, Prime Blue, or classic black with a red stripe.

For the ultimate nostalgic touch, owners can switch the digital gauge cluster to a dedicated retro-themed Fox Body layout. This replicates the precise look of the 1987–1993 Mustang’s gauges, complete with white daytime lettering that glows green at night, completing the immersive throwback experience.

Pricing and Availability

The FX package will be a desirable option for specific Mustang trims.

Exclusivity and Powertrain

Ford has not yet revealed the official pricing for the FX package. More details are expected when the full 2026 Mustang lineup officially launches later this month. The FX package will be exclusively available on GT Premium models. All these models come equipped with the powerful, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine, producing 480 horsepower (or 486 hp with the Active Valve Dual Exhaust option).

Buyers will have the choice between a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic.

Market Context and Potential Price Strategy

To provide a rough estimate, the 2025 GT Premium coupe starts at $51,080, and the convertible from $56,580, before destination charges. It remains to be seen if Ford will adjust these base prices for the 2026 model year. Considering that Mustang sales are currently down 18 percent year-over-year compared to 2024 figures, adding a significant price hike might not be the most strategic move at this time.

The FX package aims to appeal to a specific segment of enthusiasts, potentially boosting sales by tapping into deep-rooted Mustang loyalty.

Rare Spohn DV-13 Convertible Hits Auction
Prepare to encounter a vehicle unlike any other. The 1957 Spohn DV-13 Convertible, a remarkable coachbuilt custom car from Germany, is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer. This particular vehicle stands out not only for its extreme rarity – with only a handful ever constructed – but also for its undeniably audacious design. It even earned the "most audacious exterior" award at the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, a testament to its unique presence. Spohn's Bold Design Philosophy The DV-13 is a product of Spohn, a German coachbuilder renowned for its historical tradition of crafting exquisite bodywork for some of the world's finest automobiles. From Elegance to Audacity Before World War II, Spohn's bodywork adorned prestigious vehicles like Maybachs and Mercedes-Benzes, known for their sophisticated and elegant designs. However, in the post-war period, Spohn's design philosophy evolved, embracing a significantly more "creative" and unconventional approach. The DV-13 is a prime example of this shift. Its appearance has been likened to an unexpected fusion, perhaps a result of a "transporter malfunction" between a 1949 Cadillac and a Daimler SP250. It’s a design that can be an acquired taste, similar to unique culinary experiences or niche musical performances. A Conversation Starter Like No Other Despite its polarizing aesthetics, this car possesses an undeniable quality: it is arguably the greatest conversation starter of all time. If your desire is to be consistently asked, "What on earth is that thing?" at every stoplight and parking lot, then this custom roadster is your ideal ride. Its eccentric nature is truly unparalleled. Spohn's customized creations are exceptionally rare, with fewer than two dozen believed to have been built. The styling draws inspiration from various American show car concepts of the era, and perhaps, some more imaginative sources. Mechanical Details and Performance Beneath its highly unusual exterior, the Spohn DV-13 features a combination of classic automotive components. Power and Drivetrain The foundation of the DV-13 is a 1939 Ford chassis, providing a vintage base for the custom body. Power comes from a 330-cubic-inch V-8 engine, said to be sourced from a 1953 Cadillac. This provides a respectable amount of power for the era. The transmission is a three-speed manual, also reportedly from Ford. For braking, the car relies on drums at all four corners. Given the engine power and braking setup, it is suggested that the car likely accelerates "alarmingly faster than it stops." An Unexpected Concours Winner The Spohn DV-13's award-winning status at a prestigious event highlights its unconventional appeal. Audacity Recognized When one envisions a "concours award winner," the image is typically of pristine, classically beautiful vehicles. This German custom build is decidedly different. Yet, it technically secured a trophy at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. This demonstrates that sometimes, fully committing to an audacious design can indeed be its own form of success, even on the highly traditional concours circuit. This Spohn DV-13 stands as a testament to the idea that some vehicles are so unique, they loop back around to being undeniably cool, especially for those with a strong sense of humor and appreciation for automotive individuality.
