Japanese player Moyuka Uchijima has made a significant impact at the Madrid Open, achieving an upset victory on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. The world No. 56 defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, the tournament’s No. 21 seed, securing her spot in the final eight of the WTA 1000 event held at the Caja Mágica in Madrid.

Uchijima Secures Quarterfinal Berth

In their Round of 16 match played on Tuesday, Moyuka Uchijima defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets with a final score of 6-4, 7-6. The second set was decided by a tie-break, which Uchijima won 7-5. This victory marks a notable achievement for Uchijima, propelling her into the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 level tournament.

 

Path to the Last Eight

Uchijima’s journey to the quarterfinals has included a series of impressive wins. Prior to defeating Alexandrova, she overcame American wildcard Robin Montgomery in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 6-3), upset the No. 26 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in another three-set battle (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), and secured a dominant straight-sets victory against the No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula of the United States (6-3, 6-2).

 

Alexandrova’s Tournament Run

Ekaterina Alexandrova, ranked world No. 22 and seeded 21st in the tournament, had reached the Round of 16 after winning her earlier matches. Her path included victories against Serbia’s Olga Danilovic (6-3, 6-4) and the No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina from Australia (6-3, 7-6 (3)).

 

Upcoming Quarterfinal Matchup

In the quarterfinals, Moyuka Uchijima will face Elina Svitolina from Ukraine. Svitolina is the No. 17 seed in the tournament and advanced to the last eight after defeating Maria Sakkari in her Round of 16 match (6-3, 6-4).
