BMW is rolling out a series of substantial updates for its 2026 i4 electric sedan lineup. These changes are designed to enhance both the vehicle’s driving range and its overall power output.
Before the all-new i3 arrives with its “Neue Klasse” design, the popular i4 is receiving crucial improvements. These updates underscore BMW’s commitment to continuous innovation in its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio.
Increased Range: A More Efficient Inverter
A key focus of the 2026 i4 update is improved efficiency, leading to a longer driving range.
Silicon-Carbide Technology
The updated i4’s inverter will feature cutting-edge silicon-carbide semiconductor components. BMW asserts that this advanced technology will reduce energy consumption by approximately 5 percent. This translates to a notable gain of about 14 miles of additional range on a full charge. However, actual mileage may vary depending on the specific trim level and optional equipment chosen by the buyer.
Current EPA Range Estimates
To provide context, the current rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 model offers an estimated 301 miles of range on a full charge. The all-wheel-drive xDrive40 achieves an estimated 307 miles when equipped with 18-inch wheels, or a similar 307 miles with 19-inch wheels. The current range-topping M50 model, by comparison, provides an EPA-estimated 245 miles.
The new inverter technology aims to boost these figures across the board, making the i4 even more practical for longer journeys.
Performance Boost: Introducing the i4 M60
Beyond efficiency, BMW is also elevating the i4’s performance, particularly at the top end of the range.
M50 Replaced by M60
The M50 model, which served as the flagship trim for the previous four model years, is being retired. It will be succeeded by the brand-new i4 M60 trim. This new high-performance variant will unlock a maximum of 592 horsepower when driven in Sport mode. This represents a significant increase of 56 horsepower compared to the outgoing M50, promising an even more exhilarating driving experience.
Production Timeline and Availability
Potential buyers in the U.S. should note the specific production and release schedule.
U.S. Market Launch
A spokesperson for BMW confirmed to Car and Driver that while these updates are being implemented in Europe starting this summer, U.S. production will commence later. American-market models incorporating these enhancements won’t begin production until the fourth quarter of 2025.
Consequently, the updated features and the new M60 trim will officially arrive with the 2026 model year i4. Pricing and official EPA range figures for the 2026 BMW i4 lineup will be released closer to its on-sale date.
